No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manner of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

--John Donne

It is believed by some netizens on social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook that political or economic events have nothing to do with their daily life and they are more concerned with what is going on around them. Even the sort of information that appears in the news article they are reading is generally ignored, because they never feel it has any relevance to them.

However, I hold the view that as the most ordinary citizens in China, we all have a stake in affairs happening globally every day. Take for example the United States sanctions against Iran, which has seemingly no connection with ordinary Chinese students like me. However, according to what I have checked online, if China’s largest oil supplier Iran is sanctioned or even attacked, China will have to import oil from other countries, which will inevitably result in oil prices surge and possible paralysis of various forms of transportation. As a civilian, I might not be able to pay the cost for transportation.

It is a pity that the general public in China is indifferent to international affairs, and this really concerns me. This project aims to present to ordinary people the correlation between little things around us and international affairs so as to call their attention to international affairs.

Six Degrees of Separation

“Six degrees of separation between us and everyone else on this planet. The President of the United States, a gondolier in Venice, just fill in the names.”

Six degrees of separation is the idea that all living things and everything else in the world are six or fewer steps away from each other so that a chain of "a friend of a friend" statements can be made to connect any two people in a maximum of six steps.

Kevin Bacon game

This site takes any two Wikipedia articles and finds the various hyperlink paths that interconnect the two. It then shows each of the steps that were taken to do so and also presents a graphical display of the connections.

The game "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" was invented as a play on the concept: the goal is to link any actor to Kevin Bacon through no more than six connections, where two actors are connected if they have appeared in a movie or commercial together.

Butterfly effect

“Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas? ”

The butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in which a small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state.

Work Reference

The Watson project of IBM could prove the "six degrees of separation" concepin few steps.  Using a basic API to query and uncover trends and aggregations across hundreds of thousands of articles and blogs, Zach Walchuk, a Developer Evangelist for Watson Services, created a sample app that uses Watson Discovery to analyze and dig down to find connections between people.

My thinking:

Through key words that are most frequently used in a news article, the main content of the article can be summarized. After a key word is matched in the back-end system, news articles in relation to that word will be obtained and linked. The IBM project is only able to realize the extraction and link of people’s names and has a chance to provide somewhat illogical links.

Design Proposal

With regard to this topic, I hope to work out an app product to solve the problem effectively as well as a virtual hologram experience room that goes with it.
Users can utilize the app to find the relationship between big events that happened in the world and their personal life, which leads to the awareness that they are not isolated from the world, draws their attention to international affairs, and encourages them to think about and critique those affairs.
In accordance with the app, the experience space uses real-time hologram videos with sci-fi visual dynamics to display the connection map and network between users and the world.

Search Logic Research

In view of how to connect the event with the user's own characteristics, users can find the connection between random key words of macro events in the system and themselves.

Logic 1.0

Search noun phrases in articles or titles, from noun 1 to noun 2 to...the target population

Search results

Pros: Big data deals with it very quickly.

Cons: It is illogical and may lead to a lot of invalid results.
If searching in a certain language, most of the news is relevant to that particular country, even though the search content is foreign event.

Logic 2.0

Search the article plus TAG

Search results

Pros: It is easy to search a special event name plus different TAGs, then excerpt relevant paragraphs.

Cons: Most of the time, if the article does not involve two nouns directly in the network, there will be no result, so it is infeasible.

Logic 3.0

Pros: It is more logical to extrapolate from the causality of events, but requiring artificial screening of valid information.
Machines can filter many keywords, bu
t not all of them can be linked to valid information.

Cons: Only analytical articles have more information. If it is a simple narrative events with little information and relatively few clues, then the things after belong to speculation, and may not fully comply with the upcoming facts, so the PBC may not raise interest rates.

Search results

Only search the keyword of noun plus verb, then look for the result of noun 2 plus verb 2 in subsequent articles, and the final keyword can be narrowed down to a small group of people.

Logic 4.0

It comes from the logic of map

Reference of Map Navigation

In the map, each bus station may be on several different bus lines.

During map navigation, after users enter the destination and their current location, and all possible routes at each bus station will be parsed by the system, from which those routes that can get users to the destination are picked out.

After users enter the starting point and destination, the system will automatically search for transfer possibilities/routes at each station and finally obtain all routes that connect the starting point and the destination.

In this case, 3 different transit solutions are presented for users to choose from, via 14 bus stations. The system then may present the optimum routes to the users.

In the database, through the analysis of all online articles, a correlative lexicon will be generated for each set of words. For instance, by searching for all online articles, a lexicon for “FED raises interest rates” containing a set of correlative words are automatically generated.

When users search for “FED raises interest rates” and “keep a dog”, which seem totally irrelevant, the system will look for relevancy between the lexicon of “Fed raises interest rates” and that of “keep a dog” and generate a series of correlations with “FED raises interest rates” and “keep a dog” as the starting point and destination respectively that include several other words. Each correlation is supported by corresponding online articles and users can view the articles to learn more.

Search results

The search engine only lists online articles relevant to each viewpoint, while value judgement is left to users themselves. For instance, the set of words “CNY to USD exchange rate” may involve articles holding different points of view: renminbi devaluation and renminbi appreciation. The system will present both to users for them to judge.

App Design

Logo design

Each dot represents for things happening in the world, and for each individual. Dots linked with an arc indicate the potential correlation between each individual and each matter and the major function of the link is to find out such correlations. The entire logo appears in the form of a globe, symbolizing “connecting the whole world”.

Hologram Experience Design

This holographic installation is friendly to both new users and current users of this app. All the experiencers need to choose whether they belong to the new or old users on the touch screen in the doorway first.

The hologram interactive experience allows users to clearly see the link, displayed through sci-fi graphic design, between themselves and things happening in the world, in an immersive space. The rich visual experience can spark their interest in using the app.

Hologram reference

A projector ran “not found footage…not archival footage… [but] an illusion” of the real Tupac, which bounced off a reflective surface on the stage, Mylar foil, onto an angled piece of glass. This visual trick, called the Pepper’s Ghost illusion, actually dates back to the 16th century.

Holography is a photographic technique that records the light scattered from an object, and then presents it in a way that appears three-dimensional.

Hologram Tupac, a company that was founded in 1987 and aims to be the “premiere nationwide provider of audio, visual and creative solutions.”,  held a concert at Coachella. Utilizing a unique Musion Eyeliner screen and a projection system to bring the famous deceased rapper to back to life as a perceived hologram.

A model for simulating the effects of the final Experience room.

Material list: Cardboard box, iPad,  3mm acrylic sheet, black tape, black spray paint.

A black baffle made of tape is used to hide the luminous screen, so that participants will not be affected by other light sources and devote themselves to the holographic projection experience.

3mm acrylic sheet. Project a screen image into the air to create a holographic stereo effect.

From the participant's perspective, the screen will be blocked.
